Do you color your hair? If so, are you aware that it needs special products? See how to strengthen hair which is weak due to regular coloring. TOP 5 rules for stunning, smooth, healthy color-treated hair!
You decide on getting a new hair color. You get it done – hair looks lovely, feels silky and stuns with vividness and luminous highlights. Several days pass and you spot your hair starts losing the color and gloss, getting limp and coarse. It’s highly likely that it’s caused by hair care that doesn’t satisfy the needs of color-treated hair. How to care for it the right way then?
Best hair care for color-treated hair – top rules
1. Regularly hydrate your hair (also from within).
Dry hair never looks good, it’s not an option. Hair needs hydration as much as the skin does. What’s the best way to provide it? There are plenty of ways to hydrate the hair, including moisturizing conditioners, humectant-rich masks, homemade treatments based on avocado, honey, aloe. It’s important that you know that it’s impossible to hydrate the hair with water only – we also need a substance that delivers water to the deep layer of hair and the other one which keeps water inside. In other words, we need humectants and emollients. Obviously keeping hair hydrated cannot be limited to applying masks and conditioners. We must hydrate the body from within too. Drinking two liters of water a day is the base for a healthy body as well as flawless skin and resilient hair (no matter if it’s color-treated or not).
2. Use hair oils (to protect and revitalize).
As far as emollients go, color-treated hair loves oils. That is why you should use them regularly, for example with every hair wash. The method is up to you. Apply the oil (or a blend of oils) to dry hair before washing or to wet hair after shampooing. Depending on the type of oil and the amount you put, you will probably need to wash it out and the best way of doing that is applying a… conditioner first! You let it sit in for a few minutes and then rinse the hair well. The best oils for color-treated hair are unrefined, cold-pressed and natural. You can use them solo or mix them as you like, as well as enrich other products with the oil: conditioners, masks, mists. The best-selling hair oils include argan oil, almond oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil and the most powerful hair growth booster – castor oil.
3. Protect your hair against the sunlight (using the right products).
Color-treated hair needs care that helps keep the color and shine. Everybody knows that the sunlight has the biggest impact on hair leaving it dull and dry. So, sun protection is the next step to take. Apart from using it in the summer, when the sunlight is the strongest, we should secure the hair in the fall, winter and spring as well. UV protection is guaranteed by SPF hair mists and some styling products but you can also use natural oils for this purpose – argan oil is one of the best protective oils.
4. Strengthen your hair with masks (ideally repairing masks).
Repair is another thing you must focus on when caring for color-treated hair. Coloring regularly has a downside – it ruins the hair gradually and slowly. The inner structures are damaged so hair breaks and splits. Only repair treatment is able to fix it and it must be based on proper ingredients, namely proteins. Keratin is the most powerful protein because it builds the hair so it’s best to search for keratin-rich repair masks. By using them systematically, you fix damage due to coloring but also strengthen and protect hair from future damage caused by next coloring or styling procedures.
5. Take breaks (let the hair rest).
Last but not least, you should realize that coloring the hair less often is the easiest way to minimize damage. If you use the dye rarely, the problem with making your hair healthy and pretty again is definitely smaller. Let the strands rest from the factors that ruin them. Maybe it’s a good time to go back to the natural hair color?
